"THE NEGRO EMERGING FROM THE VOLCANO" or "THE FREE MAN"
A 100 FOOT HIGH SCULPTURE.
This is a project that his Excellency Abdoulaye Wade and Ousmane Sow have dreamed of for fifteen years.

Ousmane Sow
is now working on a sculpture that will be cast in bronze by the Coubertin
Foundry. It will stand 100 feet high on a hilltop.
"The Negro Emerging from the Volcano", which Ousmane Sow would like to be subtitled "The Free Man" is to be erected on the summit of one of the "Mamelles" ("Breasts") of Dakar, facing the American continent.
This "Free Man", holding his wife's hand, with a child in her arms, will symbolise the dignified return of the slave to his native land.
